This unbelievable expedition was mapped out by expert anthropologists while they were studying this region. This is where Vilcabamba, the “Lost City of the Incas” lies, the last link to the great Incas. Research has identified this site as the “Espiritu Pampu”. Hidden in the heart of the virgin rainforest, the route is incredibly interesting because it is neither a normal tourist, nor commercial route. It is filled with beautiful landscapes and archaeological sites that include small villages like Vitcos and Rosaspata.
Our expedition follows the steps of famous explorers, like Hiram Bingham, the discoverer of Machupicchu, and Gene Savoy, who finally found the real Vilcabamba site in 1964. Our trip is an unforgettable experience filled with Andean landscapes and ruined cities half-hidden in dense rainforest.
Vilcabamba is situated in the region with the same name as the Convencion province, in the department of Cusco. It is considered to be the last home of the Incas after the Spanish invasion.

DAY 1: CUSCO – HUANCACALLE – VITCOS
We leave Cusco at 4:00 am in our private bus and pass through small villages like Chinchero, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. We’ll make the ascent to a cold place close to the snow caps, where we’ll see huge snow-covered stones, and then we’ll ascend to Abra Malaga (4170 m.a.s.l.). Then we will descend to La Convencion and pass by the Alfamayu, Amaybamba, Huyro, Huayopata, and Quintalpata mountains, finally arriving to Santa Teresa. After another 2 km, we will find Chaullay (1890 m.a.s.l.), the place where both te Urubamba and Vilcabamba rivers meet. From this point, we have to go up and through Lucuma (the main village of Vilcabamba). These are good lands for architecture and growing fruits. We’ll hike through Naranjal, which is 3.5 km from Chaullay, and arrive in Paltaybamba (17 km from Chaullay). The group will rest in Huancacalle at around 3:00 pm for lunch. Just 30 minutes away, we’ll find and archaeological site at Vitcos (Rosaspata), where we will spend the night.

DAY 2: HUANCACALLE – JASUTINA – RACACHACA
We will start our second day in Huancacalle at 7:00 am. After 4 hours of walking, the group will arrive at Totora Huayco (1890 m.a.s.l.). We will ascend for 1 hour to Jasutina Pass, where we will stop for lunch. From there, we will descend for 3 hours until Racachaca, where we will find a nice view of the snow-covered peak Lasoma mountain and our second campsite.

DAY 3: RACACHACA – PUMACCASA – ABRA MOJON – MUTUYPATA
The group starts the ascension at 7:00 am from Racachaca to Pumaccasa pass, where we can see the Yanacocha lagoon. After 20 minutes of walking we’ll arrive at Pumaccasa pass. The snow-covered peak of Pumacillo and Soyroccocha lagoon offer great and wonderful views. We’ll descend to Soyrococha lagoon to enjoy lunch and continue on to Mojon pass, the highest pass in our trek. We’ll see the snowy peaks of the Veronica, Salkantay, and Huayna Picchu mountains. The group will descend for almost 4 hours until we reach Mutuypata, where we’ll wind the third campsite.

DAY 4: MUTUYPATA – YANATILE – SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES
We leave Mutuypata at 7:00 am, descending to the town of Yanatile. Along the way, we can enjoy the hot waters on the edge of the Sacsara river, and we can also see the flora and fauna that surround the breathtaking Yanatile Valley.
From Yanatile, the group will take local transportation to Santa Teresa (around 40 minutes by bus). When we reach the suspension bridge, we’ll walk for 15 minutes until we reach La Oroya, and here we will take a local bus to the Machupicchu Hydro, where we will have lunch.
Afterwards, we will continue hiking to Aguas Calientes, where we’ll spend the fourth night in a nice hotel.

DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
Early in the morning the group will take the first bust to Machupicchu, getting there in 25 minutes. The group will have a a guided tour for approximately 2 hours and then free time to enjoy and explore the citadel. At around 1:00 pm we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where we’ll have time to eat lunch. After that, we will take the train back to Cusco, where our representative will be waiting for us at the train station. Transport back to the hotel.
