The Salkantay Mountain (6271 m/20471 ft above sea level) part of the Vilcanota mountain range, was called “Apu” by the Incas and was worshipped as a deity of guidance and protection. Salkantay dominates a great part of the Sacred Valley, and the spectacular Vilcanota Mountains are the main starting point for trekking programs. The whole area is filled with majestic natural landscapes and attractive Inca archaeological sites.

The Salkantay-Inca Trail trek is an outstanding adventure. At 6271 m/20574 ft above sea level. Salkantay is Peru´s highest mountain. On this trek we hike and camp along this majestic mountain before we turn to the jungle and make our way along the ancient Inca Trail to the Inca citadel of Machupicchu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Sayllapata – Soraypampa – Sisaypampa

At 5:00 am we will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the village of Mollepata in a private bus. Along the way, we will pass through the picturesque towns of Pampa de Anta, Izcuchaca, Zurite, and Ancahuasi. Our trip will take us into the Limatambo Valley, continue onto Mollepata, where our adventure begins. In the town of Mollepata we complete the arrangements fro our trek and then we continue by bus to Soraypampa, the start of the trail, (approximately 4 hours away from Cusco). After the mules are prepared and the last arrangements are made, we start out hike up to Pampa Japonesa, then continue to the highest pass, Ikachiriaska (5200 m/17056 ft above sea level). We descend toward the Inca’s canal for 40 minutes towards Ichupata to have lunch, then go down to the Sisaypampa campsite (3750 m.a.s.l.), (7-8 hours hiking).

Day 2: Sisaypampa – Pampacahuana – Canal Inca

After breakfast we start our hike, descending to a beautiful valley with native flowers and breathtaking views for 4 hours to the Pampacahuana community where we will have lunch in the afternoon; after which we will continue to the Inca Canal, our campsite.

Day 3: Canal Inca – Inkaracay – Paucarcancha – Wayllabamba

On the third day, after breakfast, we start our trek down to the Incaracay valley and Paucarcancha archaeological site. We will have lunch after we connect the Inca Trail to the Wayllabamba campsite.

Day 4: Wayllabamba – Warmiwañusca – Pacaymayo

We start the day, early in the morning, and climb up to the highest point of the Inca Trail. Here, we can see different ecological zones and microclimates, which make up the area, laid out in front of us. We cross the Warmiwañusqa pass at 4200 meters/13780 feet above sea level; water buckets are available for washing.

Day 5: pacaymayo – Chaq’icocha – Wiñaywayna

We continue climbing up to the second pass on the Trail (3900 meters/12795 feet above sea level), and along the way we visit the Riuncuracay archaeological site. During the day walk, we also visit the Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca archaeological remains.

Day 6: Wiñaywayna – Machupicchu – Cusco

We begin the final leg of te trek to the lost city of Machupicchu. First, we walk to Inti Punku (“Sun Gate”), where we take in a panoramic view of Machupicchu. After we come down to Machupicchu and we have  a tour of the sanctuary-city. After the tour of Machupicchu, we take the bus down to Aguas Calientes where we have some free time afterwards to enjoy the town, an then taking the train back to Cusco. We will generally be back in Cusco at around 8-8:30.
