The Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m./20,471 ft. AMSL) part of the Vilcanota mountain range, was called "Apu" by the Inkas and was worshipped as a deity of guidance and protection. Salkantay dominates a great part of the Sacred Valley, and the spectacular Vilcanota Mountains are the principal starting point for trekking programs. The whole area is filled with majestic natural landscapes and attractive Inka archeological sites.
